Residential Fireplace Products :: Alsey Air-Set Refractory Fireplace Mortar--Medium Duty
This product, available in 15 lb. and 50 lb. pails, is formulated to be used with our SMITHFIELD UNBRANDED Medium Duty Firebrick and will withstand temperature up to 2700°F.
The material is ready-mixed; however, after standing for a while, some of the liquid will come to the
top and must be thoroughly mixed in before using. If mortar is frozen, allow can/pail to thaw at
room temperature.
This is an air-setting mortar; if the entire container is not used, it should be tightly capped as soon as possible, as it will start setting up once in contact with air.
We recommend a 1/16" to 1/8" joint when laying up firebrick, and the rule of thumb is 350 to 400 lbs. of mortar will lay up one thousand 9 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2" straights, depending on the thickness of the joint.
Typical set time for this mortar is between 48 and 72 hours. Though, set times can be as long as a few weeks especially in situations where fireboxes are constructed while temperatures are in the 40 to 50°F range with high humidity. If the surface of
the mortar is hard while still soft within, all the water has not escaped allowing
the mortar to
completely set.
